Some time ago a young man named Sam contacted me to ask if I could re-create a ring for him. Searching the image, I learned it is a ring worn by rock star Matt Bellamy, of the group Muse. Matt turns out to be my June 9th birthday twin, but I had never heard of him or the band before finding the ring (yeah- I am a bit divorced from popular culture).
Bellamy seems to have been given this ring in the 2001 Asia tour, and wore the ring constantly between January 2001 through the summer of 2002. It shows in photos of him, and in videos of his performances. The ring has also been featured in multiple paintings of Bellamy. Apparently the story is that a fan in Tokyo gave this ring to him.
From what I am told, fans have searched for the ring without luck. To the best of my knowledge no one knows the name of the original artist. It seems crazy- if anyone loves a performer enough to give them jewelry, and the jewelry itself becomes famous, one would think that person would make themselves known. I wonder if she is known in her home country of Japan, and we are only having language issues. If anyone reading this can offer any information about the original artist, please contact me.
Moving forward, Sam didn't have the budget to pay even for the costs of creating the original CAD, printing the wax, and making molds and models, so without really thinking it through, I suggested Sam find a few others to share the development costs. He posted on some fan pages, and I posted here to see if anyone else wants the one. Soon had a second fan, Ben, contacted me and told me how he also has been searching for the ring And now there are more. A few more people have found this and flipped out over finally finding this ring.
Many thanks to the fans who collaborated with me on getting every detail of this design to be perfect.
Regarding the first actual rings: while making the CAD (3D computer model), consensus was that the top appears to be three parts, but is actually one part, which I think will wear better than three. Also, when I first looked at the ring I thought it was on leather or rubber, but am now told it was rope.
This ring was made as a custom order, and all of the fans wanted it to be as authentic as possible, so they all wanted the band to be in rope. I was worried it would break, and thinking that Matt's original ring broke, and that is why he stopped wearing it.
This version is my interpretation of the original ring. It's solid silver, with the band textured and blackened to look like rope. The original will not be durable... and this is a timeless ring.
This ring is priced in sterling silver. It can also be made in platinum or any carat of gold, priced upon request.
NOTE: These will likely be made to order so please let me know your ring size and know it will take up to six weeks.
