Louis put the already ancient symbol on his shield for power and luck. Against all odds, against all expectations, Louis won the battle and saved France. He declared the Fleur de Lis to be the symbol of France and French nobility. There were even times when it was illegal for anyone other than French nobility to use the fleur de lis.
