Vintage glass bead on carnelian with hematite accents.
These glass beads came from a necklace owned my Miss M. My father was a 'Trust and Estate" lawyer in Philadelphia. Miss M was one of his clients, who I knew growing up, until she died in the 1970's at almost 100 years old. Miss M remembered when Broad St (the main street in Philadelphia) was unpaved, and when lights were invented. She had a lifelong boyfriend (most likely gay) but she always blamed her mother that they never married, claiming that every time he was about to propose, her mother walked in and ruined the moment. "Damn Mother" Miss M would say to me. "Damn Mother."
